This excellent photo was taken by a glider pilot just as his tow-plane starting across the North Sea to Holland. Note the telephone cable wrapped around the tow-line for communication between pilots. The slack in the non-stretchable telephone cables allowed for the expansion of the tow-line during flight. Hance A. Lunday

September 17, 1944. Four Horsa gliders have just landed on LZZ, four and one half miles east of Arnhem. Large white and black invasion stripes were painted on to identify these unfamiliar aircraft to Allied sea and ground gunners. Imperial War Museum
